A Living Prophet!

RACHEL - Hey familia!!

Awww! Mom and Dad! You are both so awesome! Thank you for the package!!! I can't wait!! And I just wanted to make sure that anyone who sends a package, to send it to the Mission Office.

Your Sabbath Day sounded amazing!! Wow now you know we are all going to do that again when we are there! Walking along the beach and that nice drive sounds just like my cup of tea! haha We actually had a Primary Program too in the 1st ward and since we have an investigator in those ward boundaries we got to go to that one, it was nice as all Primary Programs are! But lately I have been attending 3 sacraments every Sunday so far and it is wonderful! The Spiritual food that I get when I am there is tripled because of how many meetings and classes that I get to attend!

Sister Holbrook and I are staying together in Chorley! And I am very grateful for that because so far for every transfer something has always changed. Either the Companion or area and I am happy I get to stay here for a bit longer with the same companion. But I have a feeling that I am going to be moving next transfer though, but I hope not!

I got to go to the Temple again this morning! It was great! Sister Holbrook and I were even allowed to look at the baptismal font...it was breathtakingly beautiful. It was different from all the others that I have seen. It might have been the most beautiful from all that I have seen so far as well. It was an amazing experience!

Last week I got to teach Dad's "Bacon and Eggs" (Steve has been teaching the Plan of Salvation for decades now and his diagrams sort of end up looking like bacon and eggs so his students over the years have always referred to it as the bacon and eggs lesson) lesson and it went over really well!! haha I felt so proud of myself that I am able to teach the people here in England Dad's "Bacon and Eggs" and hopefully it will keep traveling around the world cause its so great!

As Sister Holbrook and I are teaching members or investigators we keep mentioning how General Conference is coming up this weekend! We always challenge everyone who watches to have at least one question, whether it be something personal, doctrinal, spiritual, or emotional it does not matter because no matter the question, you will be answered at this upcoming Conference. Either the Speakers themselves or the Spirit will answer you. I promise that for anyone who has a sincere question it will be answered. I have about 5 questions I am going to ask! Seriously, General Conference is like Christmas for Missionaries! I am so excited for my first Conference as a Sister Missionary! And lately while Sister Holbrook and I are out finding people on the streets there have been a lot of people who are truly excited about a living Prophet! It has been so wonderful to see their eyes light up when we mention it. One man we spoke to was so moved from hearing how there is a living Prophet today and how he is going to speak to the whole world this weekend, he began to cry. This experience made me think. Are we as grateful to know there is a living Prophet on the Earth right now?

Yesterday as I was listening to this CD of testimonies by modern Apostles and Prophets and I felt this overwhelming sense of gratitude. I had this feeling and realization that I am part of something truly amazing. Being a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints brings a happiness that I feel sometimes we may begin to feel complacent about. This is miraculous and we should share this with everyone and anyone. The knowledge that we have is truly beautiful and we should really think about this... to stop and think about how we are so happy. To remember that not everyone and honestly most people in the world don't come close to feeling as happy as we do in our lives. And if we don't feel happy then maybe we are being ungrateful, because our Heavenly Father loves us so much and he has honestly given us everything to be happy. He has even given us His Son so we can return to live with Him again forever. If there is nothing else that brings us happiness then let this be the reason to change our attitudes, to be happy. We are blessed and we have so much to be grateful for!

I know that I am a child of God. I know I have divine potential. I know that it is only by and through the Atonement of Jesus Christ that I can return to live with my Heavenly Father again forever. I know the Plan of happiness is real and by living the principles of the Gospel of Jesus Christ I can find the only true happiness there is that can not only last in this life but also for all eternity. Thank you to all who write and has supported me while on this experience that I wouldn't take away for anything. Thank you!

"Sunny Dundee"??

TERESA - Hi Mom and dad!!

I’m sooo glad that you guys are finding time to get away and spend some quality time with just each other. Every couple deserves that, especially you two!! I want you to know how much Rach and I love you both!! Golly, I can't say it enough! I know that it may sound silly, but being out here really makes you notice things that would've been obvious to you before but were too distracted to see it! And honestly, you two and the fam are definitely the biggest one! I love you all so very much! Thank you again and again for all that you are and do!

Moves happened but nothing changed! Sis Sheffield and I are sooo happy we are staying together!! She's great; I’m sooo glad we are companions!! She's my pally :) We had to give a presentation on the Spirit at District Meeting and how we can learn to invite it into our daily routine. It went well and it was a lot of fun too. And I had to give a talk in Sacrament Meeting on enduring to the end (thank goodness I had a talk written up from mission prep! Thank you Brother and Sister Ludwig!)

We went and visited a less-active and her friend was there too. He's not a member and he was super nice and is a pro at playing the accordion! He played for us and it was great! He said he'd come to our ward talent show!! So hey, ya never know!

We got in contact with some former investigators and they want to get back on tract to baptism! They just have to get married first, but they are willing to do it. But that may be the only thing holding them up in their progression. But we are hopeful that everything will work out for them!

So it’s starting to get colder. But honestly, up to now the weather has been wonderful! After all, I am in "Sunny Dundee" haha. This is probably the sunniest place in Scotland! So lately its just been feeling a bit more like a California winter (which we all know is nothing compared to others) So now I'm getting more used to the colder side of things, which is good :) but anyways, Halloween's coming up and Sister Sheffield and I want to throw a Halloween Party for our Zone! And I wanted to know how to make the scones so could you send the scone recipe to me? And maybe you could send the fall soup recipe too? Thank you!!

Well I think that's all for now I'll update you soon. I hope all is going well with the family and I've been praying for everybody especially Dad. I know this Church is TRUE! And I have made the best decision in my life to come out and serve in Scotland and hey maybe Ireland! I love you all and thank you to everyone who is praying for Rach and I. We really appreciate it. I encourage each of you as we listen to the Prophet of God this weekend to write a personal question that you have down on a piece of paper and I promise as you listen to the talks that you will have that question answered! I've done this and I know it works! Love you!

RACHEL - Hello family

Oh my goodness things just keep getting better and better don't they? ... But I believe in miracles.

I hope Mickie and Matt are all right and that the fire didn’t touch their home! I am excited to see your lesson from RS and to add it to my collection of talks and such. I used Dad's object lesson with the rubber band and they loved it!! Thank you dad for you Brilliant ideas!! You are the best!

Not much has happened with me this past week except for our investigator Brian Hill was baptized!! He is about 38 years old and was being taught by the Elders but then we white-washed in and took over teaching him! So it was wonderful to see him make those promises and we're excited to see him progress in the gospel.

We are teaching a woman name Patricia Kent who is about late 40's. She has a baptismal date for the 9th of October! I remember walking beside her in the street and asked if she needed any help (because we were on a slope going upward and she had a cane, walking slowly). She said she was all right and then I began to share our message with her. She then told me that she wasn't interested but something told me to keep talking to her. After a little bit she said that we could meet with her! She now says to us how glad she is for me stopping her in the street and to have kept talking to her even though she said no at first. I truly know that it is possible to be persistent and respectful at the same time. If we have the Spirit we can receive the gift of discernment to know whether or not someone is truly ready to hear the gospel even if they say no. I have felt this wonderful gift one other time besides this and know that it is essential to always keep the Spirit with you so you can be an instrument in the Lord's hands.

I am so grateful for you mom and dad and hope you know I am grateful to you both for teaching me good principles and even just to be polite. So many times I run into people who are incredibly rude and immature who are twice my age. I am grateful for this gospel and what it brings to my life, real happiness.

Thank you to all that has written me, it really makes me happy to know how my family and friends are doing :)

Haggis!

TERESA - Hello Family,

Mom, guess who was asked to teach the Relief Society Lesson last Sunday? You guessed it! The Sister Missionaries. When I looked in my Gospel Principles Manuel and saw that you were teaching that very same lesson (since I have the schedule in it from the Saratoga Ward) I wanted so badly to see your lesson and just do that! haha but unfortunately that wasn't going to happen! So we did our best with the zero materials that we had. Seriously guys, don't ask the missionaries to teach those lessons, we have zero time and resources for that! But it worked out ok. People said we did a good job :) But church as a whole was soooo good too! Better than usual. We had an investigator come and he liked it and we also had some less-actives come as well! It is such a great feeling when you see the people you work hard with progress! So yeah, it was a good Sunday.

Things feel like they are really starting to move forward with the ward! They are becoming, little by little, more missionary minded! Yay! So although not too much is happening at the moment, I see things moving in the right direction :)

We taught this one woman named Donna. She's married (hard to come by!) and has 2 kids. She is the friend of a less-active, Michelle, who is trying to get back into it and come to church! We had an amazing first lesson with her where Michelle bore the most powerful testimony! (Seriously guys, that's why we need members to go out teaching with us! The investigator just sees the badge and kind of just expects us to say the things we say. But when a member says what they know to be true, it just adds as another strong witness!) And Donna said that since Michelle is not a sucker then it has to be true, haha, but we asked her to pray about it as well. And then at the end she started laughing a bit and she said beaming, "Sorry, I'm not laughing at you, I just feel so happy. In fact, when you gave me the pamphlet I felt this feeling of warmth and happiness right then." And I said "Donna, that's the Spirit!" haha. She actually felt and recognized the Spirit! Wow! It was an excellent experience. The stuff that happened in that lesson is the kind of stuff missionaries dream would happen but think never will. But it did! Sister Sheffield and I skipped away from that teach so excited! I am sooooo glad I have this opportunity to see these things happen; people's lives changing for the better :)

Aileen Baird, the dry Mormon I told you about, talked to her husband for the first time about baptism after going to church for a year. And he wasn't opposed to the idea! She was soooo happy and says that there may be a baptismal date scheduled soon! She just wants to make sure he's a hundred percent on board with the idea. Things are looking really good. :D

I finally ate Haggis! (A national dish of Scotland. A haggis is actually a large spherical sausage made of the liver, heart and lungs of a sheep, all chopped and mixed with beef or mutton suet and oatmeal and seasoned with onion, cayenne pepper, and other spices. The mixture is packed into a sheep's stomach and then boiled.) And you know what? Not too bad haha. I liked it, in fact! Just a little bit of ketchup and it's quite the meal. It was battered so I'm sure that helped as well :) I also had White Pudding too. Which is basically Black Pudding but without the blood. haha I really liked that too actually. If you haven't tried it yet, you really should, even if just for the experience of eating it. haha

Well, I love you all and I'm so grateful to all of those people who have written Rachie and me! We are praying for everyone back home, you guys are definitely always in our thoughts and prayers. I love you mom and dad and thank you so much for being the example that I look to when I'm stuck. Being out here has definitely made things so clear as to seeing the blessings that I had growing up back home. And you guys were and are that major and obvious blessing! I am so glad and forever in debt to my Heavenly Father for loving me that much to give me you as parents. Because you were made just for me! No other parents would do or could do. You were just what I needed. Thank you so much for all the love and endless support. I love you guys so much and I'm so happy you are my mom and dad!
