RACHEL - Hello family!!

So today started off great!! We were stopped by tons of members today when we were heading to an appointment we had with a potential investigator. haha It was great something that I am not use to but I love it!! The appointment with A. Smallshaw went incredibly well! Sooooo well that she committed to baptism on the 26!! This was her first lesson and she had already said she received this peaceful feeling which we helped her identify was the Spirit!! She has 5 little children and we are excited to get her family closer and stronger through the gospel!

Sister Holbrook and I have noticed that we have been walking quite a bit lately, but we calculated how far we had walked one day this past week and it came up to 9 MILES!! haha ahhh! In just ONE day! haha My feet were hurting just a little bit to say the least but I love it, walking areas are just my kind of areas! I hope I serve in more of those!

Well, we have been having tea (dinner) with a lot of the members here in both wards lately and one of the married couples we had tea with, told us they were cousins!!! Ewww! haha Apparently that's legal here! They asked if that was legal in America and all I said was "It's definitely not legal in California!" Well at least I hope not! haha Gross. Twenty-five states prohibit marriages between first cousins BUT California isn't one of them! Six states allow first cousin marriage under certain circumstances, like Utah- if both are 65 or older, or if both are 55 or older and one is unable to reproduce, and North Carolina allows first cousin marriage but prohibits double-cousin marriage. First cousin marriages are prohibited in:

Arkansas, Delaware, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Texas, Washington, West Virginia, Wyoming

Also one morning as I was getting ready I started smelling smoke from our bedroom and then as I opened the door to the living room/kitchen is was enveloped with smoke! I had forgotten that I put a slice of toast in earlier and had forgotten all about it! haha It smelled like burnt toast for about 5 days after. I think I'll just stick to cereal...

But things are going great for me and I love being so close to the temple! This past week we have gotten 6 referals from the members!! That is an incredible number and a miracle to missionaries! So seriously if you have ANYONE in mind who you like the littlest bit and want them to be happy, refer them to the missionaries. I wish I realized before my mission how important that was and tried harder to help...

Edinburgh Military Tattoo

TERESA - Hello Hello!

Ok so I have a new companion now and she is so great! Her name is Sister Sheffield and she's from Logan Utah. She's been out a year already and goes home in 5 1/2 months. She was actually less-active before she came and is a total example to me of dedication. I am so happy that she decided to come out or else I wouldn't have been able to learn from her. She is super relaxed and a lot of fun so the work is going along very smoothly :) We get along excellently with each other and we can really be ourselves too, which I'm really happy about!!

It is so weird to lead an area because in a way it's all on you to figure out where to go! But the Lord has definitely been directing our paths! I'm getting better at planning too :)

So last night the missionaries in Scotland got to go to the Edinburgh Military Tattoo!! (2010 marks the Diamond Jubilee year of Edinburgh's celebrated Royal Military Tattoo. Against the world famous backdrop of Edinburgh Castle this landmark 60th anniversary production will feature awe-inspiring colour and variety from the four corners of the globe. Discover highlights of the event, details and facts about the bands and performers over the years, lots of details about Edinburgh Castle and our Scottish Regiments.) It was sooooo much fun! Sister Sheffield and I got t-shirts for our companionship unity haha. I personally like hers better but its ok, it was a fun experience! Since us missionaries didn't get home till 1:00 a.m we were allowed a long lie in! We slept in till 10 in the morning today and let me tell you it was weird and nice at the same time!

So the work is going a little slower than what we would like but our District decided we would focus on getting the ward missionary minded! They are great but they don't really do missionary work ahhh! But we will so get this sorted out. But we are hopeful and things are definitely going to be picking up, I can feel it!

That is so perfect that Amy Harmer is serving! She is so great and she will be an amazing missionary you can already tell with her :) Well I gotta run but I love you all and thank you for everything!!

Chorley!!

RACHEL - Hello familia!!

Ok, my Companion is Sister Andrea Holbrook. She is from Wasilla, Alaska (an hour north of Anchorage). She has been serving for 11 months and two weeks (haha I thought I would be precise). She is really easy going and has a great sense of humor! She loves the outdoors especially hiking and four-wheeling. WE get along Great with one another especially in the work. I seriously couldn't ask for a better companion to white-wash with! We were talking the other day about even though she is obviously the senior companion, it's like we're equals, we are the ultimate companion to one another cause we both know as much about the area and the members of the wards as the other companion does! haha It's really great, I know we will be serving for a while together! I am just really happy I have a companion that I get along well with ;)

White-washing really is great, especially when you get along with your companion!

We attended Chorley 2nd Ward and 3rd Ward yesterday for the first time and let me tell you, it feels like I have two P-Days in a row! I gotta tell ya, I really do feel so blessed and lucky to have 2 Sacrament Meetings, 2 Sunday Schools, and 2 Relief Societies to attend every Sunday! After we bore our testimonies in both of them the Bishopric both shared how excited they were to finally have Sisters and how they should take advantage of this great opportunity! How having us opens more doors to possibilities for the work to progress! We had tons of single sisters coming up to us asking if they could fellowship, feed us and have investigators to be taught at their homes! Wow, we sure felt loved, it was great! And that’s how it should be, EVERYONE is asked to be a missionary whether we have a badge or not! It made me realize that it really is the missionaries job to get members excited about missionary work and now that we have a new burst of enthusiasm we have to now deliver with working harder than before to try to have more people to teach!

And it really is looking great too! We have some really solid appointments with some potential investigators and are very excited to teach them!

The Chorley 2nd Ward is apparently the largest ward in all of UK and the 3rd Ward isn't that far off to being around the same amount of people either! We are sharing the 3rd Ward with the Zone Leaders but boy oh boy am I excited to take this on!

We are only walking in this area so it is taking my body and feet a little bit to adjust to the constant hustle and work that a walking area entails. So I am a little achy needless to say :) But I really do love being in a walking area more than a car, because it is soo much easier to talk to people this way! It's wonderful!

Chorley has this really familiar feel to it; a very homey atmosphere. Sister Holbrook and I both agree that walking these streets and being in this area has a very comfortable feeling of home to it. I suppose that maybe it also might be cause of the temple being so close to us as well! For exercise each morning, we get up and walk to the temple and around it's grounds! It is miraculous being so close, I hope I never get used to it being so close to me.

New Area!

RACHEL - Hello!!

Guess What??? I am Already WHITEWASHING!!! haha It is amazing, I love it!! I am in Chorley now and am with a new companion Sister Holbrook! She is from Alaska! I can already tell we are going to get along great and work well with one another!! I am overlooking TWO wards!! I can't believe I am taking on all these new responsibilities, but I guess the Lord really has faith in me :) I am very up to the Challenge and already love it here!! I am literally about a 5 minute walk away from the Preston Temple! Its fantastic! We are only going to be walking cause they only have about one bus here so there is no point and apparently this area in the mission is where we only really find people to teach by working through and with the members! I have already met some and they are FANTASTIC!

That is great Bobby had a great talk and managed to put mission stories in his talk :) I made sure to let all the missionaries that were returning home know that they should talk about their experiences here!! I told them that my dad gets so frustrated when they barely mention anything about the mission! haha

I hope Grandma Kullick is ok and tell her I love her sooo much and can’t wait to hear from her again!!

I may need to send some things home because my suitcase is already getting unbelievably heavy... ha whoops :D

And mom, I'm ahead on the 180 day challenge too! (I told her I was ahead of the 3 page a day Manchester BoM challenge!)

Waiting in the Mission Home

TERESA - Hi ya!

I'm glad Bobby did well on his homecoming talk! (Bobby Shawhan just came back from the Dominican Republic.) Still really hard to believe that he's home already! Feels like he just left like a few months ago haha.

Thank you for everyone and the letters and post cards I receive!! I know I'm not like Rach and say whom I got a card from (maybe I should start!) but I really do appreciate it! Thank you soooo very much again.

Ok so I don't even know where to begin! SO much has happened! Currently I'm in the Mission home right now with Sis Doyle (she's serving in Dunfermline, about a half hour train ride away from my area, Dundee) and we are waiting on our new companions coming over from Ireland. I'm getting Sis Sheffield and people tell me she's great so I'm looking forward to that! But I do have to say that I am extremely bummed about Sis Nelson leaving me! I love her so much and we were really close friends, even thinking about it makes me sad! But I know that change is progression and that I will learn a lot from my new comp! But Sis Nelson and I already decided that we are going to visit each other after I get back! I'm looking forward to it because she is absolutely amazing!!

Yesterday I spent the day in Edinburgh with the sisters serving there. It was interesting being in a group of 3 but a lot of fun. I really felt like I was in a totally different mission! Edinburgh is completely different from Dundee and it was nice to see and do the work somewhere else! Let me tell you, I am absolutely in love with Edinburgh! It is the most beautiful city ever. No place like it :). So today was our P-day and Sis Doyle and I went exploring in the city! It was such a fun day. We went shopping and the Fringe Festival was on! How lucky are we? There were amazing street shows on and tons of crazies on the Royale Mile dressed up in random costumes passing out flyers. It was the best; The Fringe Festival is a 3-week thing that's all about light theatre. I got a lot of really nice things in the town and we had a fun filled day! This is definitely my kind of city!

So thank you mom for sending me your weekly mini packages! Love 'em! I must say though Madre; I don't like the idea of you decreasing the amount of church activities! Not ok! Missionaries need church functions for investigators to come to so that they can become more and more friends with the members and church. Hmmm I think you need to rethink this strategy. Get excited about your calling!!

Thank you so very much for the CD's!! Golly gee wiz did we need them. Sis Nelson and I were getting so tired of the same albums over and over again. It doesn't surprise me that Rach couldn't listen to them, don't you remember her list of music she could have and how specific it was? President Griffiths isn't is as strict. He is a white handbook President and as long as it fits those standards it’s A-Ok.

I hope Grandma Kullick is doing well! I got worried for a second while reading the e-mail. Grandma I love you and I am praying for you and your health! I send you my love! :)

We had an excellent Zone conference with President Kopischke (pronounced Kapishka), our area authority over the Scotland area. He was brilliant and I learned so much! He helped me see things in a different light and Sis Nelson was even saying how I’m lucky because with his instruction, I'll be a better missionary than what she was taught (yeah right, she was stellar). She said she wished she'd had this Conference in the beginning of her mission. I was truly great and I feel like a better missionary because of it.

So I am going to be leading my area. Ahhhh! Oh my goodness I'm freaked out. But after our amazing Zone Conference I know that all I have to do is trust in the Lord and He will direct my paths-literally! Honestly, Proverbs 3:5-6 is my new motto because without it I would die! I'm still working on it but I'm a lot better then I was. Every time I get worried or afraid I just think of that and I know I will be all right!!

Well I'm happy to be here and I know this is where I'm supposed to be! I know that my Heavenly Father loves every single one of His children and that if we just trust and believe in Him completely, then it will be ok! But the completely bit is the hardest part to master but I'm working on it!

I love you all and I am so glad to have been born of goodly parents who love the Lord! Thank you with all my heart for being exactly what I needed. LOVE YOU!

The bottom picture is where we go street contacting in Timperley! It is just a little walk away from my flat! The Grand Canyon sounds exciting, maybe we'll all go there someday! RACHEL - Hello!

Wow Bobby (Bobby Shawhan is coming home from his mission in the Dominican Republic!) is already coming home!!!?? No way! Man, time really flies! I love it! Tell him I say Hi for me!

A For sale sign eh? Hmm well I guess since Janay doesn't random pop by anymore I guess we wouldn't know any more details on that. (Janay Cherry lived near us and play volleyball, soccer and field hockey with the girls. Sometimes it felt like she lived with us!)

That is so sweet of Emily (Jacobsen - used to be in our ward) to say hi! She has always been very kind and sweet. Well I do hope she seriously considers a mission because it’s just like you said mom, it could do her only good! I would regret not having this experience because it has already given me strength in aspects of my life that I didn't know I need strengthening in! She would be a great missionary and she should go for it! There are plenty of people waiting to hear the gospel through her if she desires to serve!

So this past week we have recognized that our teaching pool is incredibly low and so we decided to have one day this past week of just finding and tracting and it has been wonderful!! I remember thinking around the 3rd hour of talking with people that I was just so happy that I am doing what I am doing. Seriously, there is NO other place I rather be than here right now serving my Heavenly Father. We have seen a lot of results from that day and then the next day we fasted so we could have more people to teach and that they would be placed in our paths. Since then we have been seeing progress slowly but surely but it really is great! We were able to get a lot of appointments from this past week and cannot wait till we meet with them and teach them! Fasting and Prayer are wonderful instruments that we have been given to perform miracles! I know that to be true! I am so grateful for those years where as a family we would fast EVERY Sunday for Dad to have fulltime employment. It showed me how that our effort makes a difference and we will be blessed, maybe not right away but eventually, if we are steadfast in our faith.

My companion and I were asked to sing at another funeral this past week. I never thought that I would have to do that as much as I have been while being on a mission. It was a service for a still born baby of a married couple in our ward. We sang “Nearer my God to Thee” and it was quite a bittersweet experience. It was wonderful to have the focus of the service on the Plan of Happiness. The Temple is the source to tie the strings of the Plan of Salvation together. I am so grateful for that knowledge and the opportunity to share it with the people here in England.

Mom, if you could send more object lessons that would be great! I have used some of them so far and they are GREAT!! I love them; I have gotten great reactions from them!

But thank you for sending the wedding pictures! I appreciate them!! And for all the support that you and dad have given me while I’ve been here! I love you all greatly!!

A long ways to go!

TERESA - Hey Family!

Whoa! Bobbie Shawhan is coming home already! (Bobby Shawhan is coming home from his mission in the Dominican Republic!) Crazy! Well I know he did wonderfully on the mission and I wish him well for when we comes home! It is insane how time flies.

A "For Sale" sign huh? Hmmm, I know Janay mentioned some things when we last saw her but it was a long while ago. I hope she's doing ok, she's probably not living there anymore anyways though. Maybe you could try dropping by one evening and introduce yourself and send our best wishes. Her mom knew us and loved us so I'm sure she would love to meet you! Oh wait, you met her at jr. prom, haha Never mind, but still maybe you could get some contact information for us on how to reach Janay after the mission (i.e. cell phone number, address, etc.). That would be great! Because we love Janay and Rach and I always want to remain in touch with her!

Emily Jacobson, she was the older girl in the family right? Like Amelia's age? I totally remember her! I thought she was lovely as well and totally sweet. I'm glad you encouraged her to serve a mission ;) The world needs good solid sisters out there and she'd be very much appreciated!

Thank you so much for sending the photos! I will be on the look out for sure! And by the way, I haven't gotten any packages yet; it is probably still sitting in the mission home. So just keep that in mind, if you send a package to me, better to send it to me earlier rather than later because I won't receive it till someone from my area happens to go to the mission home and comes back with mail! But thank you!

So things are going nifty in my neck of the woods. We are still trying to work with members to do missionary work -haven't made too much progress in that area yet but we are hopeful! That's why I stress to you all to help out the missionaries in your ward in whatever way you can! They seriously cannot do this alone, and a lot of people seem to think that they can here. We need the members help!

Yesterday at church it was honestly kind of rough for Sister Nelson and I and we weren't feeling our usual happy selves. The whole week had kind of felt like a flop in some ways and we were a little bummed about it. And I have a firm testimony that our Heavenly Father is aware of us and He does love and care for us always. And He will bless you as you continue to press forward and do what is right. Because after church we went and saw this girl Stacy, 22, and she has a son named Logan, 3. And this was the first time we were able to talk to her and she was totally interested! (We weren't getting too much of that response this week!) And she is also friends with a recent convert and she saw the change in him and wants that for herself and wants a strong foundation for her son. She is so solid and we were seriously on cloud 9 the whole time! Let me tell you, I really needed that and I am so thankful to Heavenly Father for sending us to her. She is a kingdom builder in the making and she is so nice and sweet. We set up 3x30 with her (meeting with them 3 times a week for 30 minutes) and let me tell you I am stoked! We are so hopeful for the future and things are really looking to be promising :) Someone told me before I went out on the mission that Satan will try to drag you down the most when something really good is about to happen. That when everything seems to be going wrong, not to get down because that means something amazing is about to come forth. I guess that is really happening :)

I am so grateful to be here and to see the miraculous changes in these people's lives!! I know this is true and that this gospel only brings happiness to lives! You can be apart of this too, be that member missionary that's waiting to break out! haha As you help the missionary efforts in your ward you will see this happen. A member told me yesterday that the trap that members have is getting comfortable. The mindset that "we've made it"; we don't need to do too much more. That is totally false! When we have a building and a full ward keep in mind that you can have another building and another ward. We haven't made it till we have covered the whole earth! So don't fall into that trap! Because there is still a long ways to go!

Thank you mom and dad for everything you have done for me! I have more of an appreciation for you everyday!! I love you both and I pray for you every night! Thanks for being diligent in your letter writing too! That means sooooo much to me! It always makes my day to see one of your envelopes on the floor of my flat! I love you! Thank you!

"Sandlot" in Scotland?

TERESA - Howdy!

How's life back home? Anything new and exciting? Thanks dad by the way for the letters, they have been just what I needed sometimes! And mom, as always, thank you sooo much for your weekly updates! Not every mom is as amazing as you! We have used some of the missionary object lessons and they have been really effective. Could you also send some more that don't involve a whole lot of food? As missionaries we don't have too many resources if ya know what I mean, so lessons that don't involve too much would be great! But thank you again!

So a few interesting things that have happened to me....So me and Sis Nelson had our very own Sandlot experience haha. We chapped the letter flap of this one door and this dog went crazy on the other side and no one was in. At first we thought this dog was on the smaller side until it shoved its paw through the letter slot! It was massive! haha And so my comp took a stick and opened the slot so we could see what we were up against and it was a beast and it's bark was monstrous! It was hilarious and we got out of there quick :)

Also the Dundee Stake is putting on a play, Saturday's Warrior, and we were over at a member family's house that is really involved in the play. They brought it out and we read some lines and I loved it! It was so cheesy, and I said how fun this would be to take back home. So they gave me a copy! So now I have the screen play to Saturday's Warrior haha, guess our stakes doing it when we get back, what do ya think? Haha

Also we contacted into a gypsy! It was an interesting experience but we got a return app out of it :)

So Sister Nelson doesn't want to go home yet but her time is quickly approaching (nooo!). She was saying how she thought that she would be this spiritual giant at the end of her mission, like a superhero or something but how she feels like she isn't. And I was thinking about it and I thought that I think all missionaries feel that way. But I figured this since I love the superhero stuff, that before our missions we were just civilians and now we are our Savior's sidekicks. We are close to Him and strive to follow Him but we just aren't there yet. And after the mission we are trying to pattern our lives after Him and to be like Him, to become the superhero. And becoming the superhero takes a lifetime to achieve; it doesn't just happen over night! So for now I'm just His sidekick, representing Him. Haha I know I'm sounding really lame right now but I liked that analogy. But don't worry to those who haven't served missions, because every member IS a missionary and although you aren't wearing a badge, you are still representing Him! So all members are his sidekicks too! ha-ha

Right Place at the Right Time

RACHEL - Hello!

Well I have the bottle of the medication but not the box so hopefully when I send it, it will be ok but that is all I have.

Its ok mom about the pictures ha whenever you can get them to us we will be happy to receive them! Oh and apparently the office has a package for me from you! Thank you! I am excited!

I was able to receive a very lovely Postcard from Wendy Penny! Thank you for that!

I also got letters from Grandma and Grandpa Kullick, thank you!

I had just put up the 4th of July stars you sent! They look great! They are hanging over where we study!

I will also be sending the music list that I am allowed to listen to because I may not be able to listen to the music that you sent me :(

My companion and I are also creating this project of a bulletin board of pictures of all the members of the ward. I obviously got the idea from our own ward which always really helped me figure out the names of people and those that were new! We are excited to begin!

So I'm sure you already know that I have also been talking in my sleep, well apparently I said a full on prayer out loud in the middle of the night a couple of nights ago. My companion said it was about one of our investigators and that it actually made complete sense. I kind of recall this.... haha man.

I had another exchange again! I really do love exchanges, they really help me get re energized in the work! The first time I was with Sister Snell who is amazing and I really want to serve with her one day and the one I just recently served with was with Sister Douglas here in Manchester South area. She only has one more transfer left. She was really great! We could really be ourselves around each other! She really was a great example on following the promptings of the Spirit.

A miracle happened when I was on the Exchange with Sister Douglas! We were dropping off a member at the church one evening after she came to fellowship with us at a lesson. As we were driving out we saw this older man who was parked on the side of the road right next to the church looking at his car. From what we could see his tire was smoking and he had gotten a flat. We drove up on the side and asked if he needed any help. He said that he was okay and he would be alright. Right after his response, I quickly asked Sister Douglas if she knew how to change a flat tire. She said yes and then I said to the man that my friend knows how to change a flat tire so we really could help. He looked at us and said well if you know how to change a flat then come on and help me. It was great! His name is Patrick (was about 60 years old) and was on his way to pick someone up from the Airport and was pressed for time. We were also able to have a great discussion with him about what us Missionaries do and how we found out he was Catholic and his beliefs while we were helping him change his flat! He was very appreciative. In the end we just simply asked if we could then schedule an appointment to share more about what we share and without hesitation he said yes! It was amazing how the Lord really placed someone in our path! And the really great part about all this is that we were never planning on going to the church that night but because this member needed to be dropped off we were there at the perfect timing to help him. I felt so great after that experience because it really makes a difference the service that you do towards others. Who knows he could've been one of the many who just walk past us without a second glance. But because of the service that we showed towards him that may have softened his heart! Everything that we do as members of this church makes a difference! We always have to be aware if there is someone in need and to just simply offer and help. Thank you for all the help that has been given to me by all of you who have helped me get to where I am now! Love you all!
